Help / About
Adventure Routes New Zealand - Free route information and GPS files for people wanting to explore NZ.
- This site is being populated with data captured by users. The routes should be used as a guide only, follow them implicitly at your own risk.
- Respect the routes! Littering, wandering off the route and ripping up the ground will only result in loss of access.
Help
- You can use a wheel mouse to zoom the map in and out.
- Click on each of the routes for a description of each route and a link to download a detailed GPX file. You will need to right click on the GPX file link and select "Save link/target as". With some browsers you will need to manually change the extension to be .gpx.
- The routes shown on this page deliberately included limited detail in that they do not follow the "actual" roads/tracks very well. If you want to see the routes in detail download the detailed GPX files and open them with Google Earth.
- If the route line is wide and transparent the route uses computer generated data rather than real world data, therefore it is not as reliable and extra caution should be taken.
- If you have a GPS receiver the GPX files can be uploaded and used out in the field. See the Web Site to Garmin GPS section below about uploading directly to a GPS from this web site.
- If the route uses field data you can download the file from the "GPX Track File" link. If the route has a computer generated data you will need to download the appropriate gpx file for your GPS receiver. Receivers can generally handle up to either 50, 125 or 250 point files. If you receiver can use more points download the "GPX Track/Route File" and use GPSBabel to filter the file to the appropriate number of points.
- If you have a GPS receiver other than a Garmin use GPSBabel to change the files to the appropriate format for your GPS receiver.
Web Site to Garmin GPS
If you have a Garmin GPS you can use the Garmin Communicator Plugin to upload the route files from this site directly to your GPS. You will need to download the Garmin Communicator Plugin. Following this, if you click on the Upload to GPS link in each of the description boxes you will be taken to a page that will find GPS units connected using a USB port and allow you to upload the file to your GPS.
Route Data or Updates Wanted
If you have any GPS track log files recoded for trips you have been on or if you have created GPS routes files of relevance please email them for inclusion on this site. This site relies heavily on the contribution of route data from users - especially for the North Island. GDB, or GPX files are preferred but if you have any other file formats feel free to forward them as the data may be able to be used. If you have downloaded route data from this site and it is no longer appropriate or needs updating please email updated route information with an explanation of why the data needs updating.
Other Useful Software
If your Garmin GPS didn't come with software for uploading data EasyGPS is recommended.
If you have a mapping Garmin GPS (especially if it is capable of auto routing) check out the New Zealand Open GPS Maps Project for Garmin Mapping GPS for free auto routing street maps.
If you need to convert the GPX files to other formats for GPS brands other than Garmin GPSBabel is recommended.
